When my daughter developed an eating disorder (anorexia) at the age of 12, our world turned into a nightmare. The panic attacks, hospitalizations, desire to die, the perpetual urge to move, dropping out of school, losing all perspective, the search for good help, heart examinations, the drastically low weight, the complete lack of understanding from the outside world, the complete lack of understanding from ourselves, and the stories that this could last up to 7 years. And I haven't even mentioned the eating part yet. Our once close-knit family fell apart. No one could handle it anymore. And yet, I'm writing this almost three years later, and we've grown. We've had to confront each other, expose our family's dark sides, and fully surrender to our smart, perfectionist daughter who has wanted to do everything herself since her earliest childhood. And now this. And we stand beside her, during this difficult process of taking steps forward and then steps backward. Together with her, we're figuring out what lies beneath this need for control. What's so frightening about letting go of this control over food? Who are you without the eating disorder? Why aren't you good enough without the eating disorder? We're slowly discovering. Alongside a fantastic coach from Isa Power, who is working with her at her own pace.
When this happened to us, I was already a coach/therapist by profession, but this period has once again made me realize how important the three basic needs are: Autonomy, Connection, and Moments of Success. These three words continue to guide me in helping my daughter and certainly my clients in practice. Where is the autonomy when you're admitted? Do you still have connection with the crucial people of your age when you're not even going to school anymore? And isn't everything you do based on failure? What are you still doing right? Yes, losing weight. Your only moment of success. I have seen with my own eyes with my daughter that when you can create new moments of success and shift the focus, the eating disorder can fade into the background. By following my own intuition, I felt that she needed to return to school. So, I made sure that my daughter could return to mainstream education. Despite many rejections and disappointments (I was the only one who thought she belonged in mainstream education because she was still fully in the grip of anorexia), moving and returning, endless conversations and visits to special education schools and with the Collaboration Platform, in August 2023 came the liberating words: Roselijn is unconditionally accepted at our school. A fantastic principal of an Amsterdam school dared to do it and created an opportunity! Roos is now in the third grade of Havo (she did not do the first and second grades of Havo), she is the top of her class (moments of success), she has friends (connection), and works at Albert Heijn (autonomy)! Three years ago, I couldn't have imagined this!
With this vision, I welcome you to my practice.
I hope to see you soon and be able to help further. We're in this together.
