What is the best therapy for Eating Disorders?

There is no such thing as the best therapy. Because many factors contribute to the development of an eating disorder, and since every person’s situation is different, the “best treatment” must be custom tailored for each individual. The process begins with an evaluation by a physician or counselor. Recommendations include any or all of the following. In general, the more components included in the treatment plan, the faster the person makes progress. What is important is that a therapist or coach should look at the individual, and adapt his treatment program to the individual needs, level of intelligence, sensitivity, traumas etc. There are many things that may cause people to develop an eating disorder, and there are reasons to maintain it as well. A good therapist understands the copingmechanism and helps the client to create another healthy mechanism instead. Thats what the coaches of ISA Power do.

As part of eating disorder treatment several types of therapy could (and should) be used.

  • Art Therapy
  • Dance/Movement Therapy (PMT)
  • Dialectical Behavioral Therapy
  • Family Therapy
  • Medical Nutrition Therapy
  • Trauma Therapy (EMDR)
  • Mindfulness/Yoga/Hypnoses

When considering which therapies to include as part of a treatment plan for an eating disorder, it is important to get advice from an expert in this field. Firstly, need to be determined what problems or underlying issues and factors are underneath the eating disorder. And of course the desires and strengths of the individual participating in the treatment is crucially important as well. Understanding the various aspects is very helpful in deciding which therapies should be included in the overall treatment plan.
